How I Work with Clients

Every marketing consultancy works slightly differently. Some focus on strategy and presentations. Others concentrate purely on execution.

The Tight Lines approach sits somewhere in the middle.

As a Fractional CMO, my role is to help leadership teams make better commercial marketing decisions and ensure those decisions actually turn into actions and progress.

That means combining strategic thinking with practical delivery.

 

Working with Leadership Teams

Most engagements involve working closely with founders, CEOs, or commercial leaders, often as an external marketing consultant supporting the leadership team.

The starting point is always the same - understanding the business.

This usually includes:

  • how revenue is generated

  • who the real target customers are

  • where pipeline currently comes from

  • what marketing activity is already happening

From there, we identify where marketing effort is helping growth and where it may be creating noise rather than momentum.

 

Strategy That Leads to Action

Marketing strategies often fail because they become documents rather than operating plans.

My approach is to create strategies that translate directly into action.

That typically means focusing on a small number of priorities rather than long lists of initiatives.

These priorities usually revolve around:

  • clearer positioning

  • tighter target market definition

  • better alignment between marketing and sales

  • improving pipeline quality

In some situations this work begins with a focused pipeline review, similar to the approach I outline in the 30-Day Pipeline Reset.

 

Once these foundations are in place, execution becomes much easier.

 

Working Alongside Teams

Where companies have internal marketing teams, my role is not to replace them.

Instead, I provide senior guidance and structure so that the team can focus on the work that matters most.

That might include:

  • helping define priorities

  • mentoring marketing leaders

  • selecting agencies or supporting agency management

  • improving reporting and commercial accountability

  • advising on team structure and hiring other team members

The aim is to leave the business stronger and more self-sufficient.

 

Focused Interventions

Not every organisation needs a long-term engagement. In fact, many businesses reach out when they realise it may simply be the right moment to bring in fractional marketing leadership.

In some situations a focused intervention is more appropriate.

Examples include:

  • marketing audits or strategic resets

  • positioning and messaging work

  • pipeline performance reviews

  • developing a clear go-to-market plan

These engagements are designed to bring clarity quickly and create a practical roadmap for the months ahead.

 

Pragmatic Collaboration

Consultancy work is most effective when it remains practical.

I work in a collaborative way that fits around the realities of running a business.

That may include:

  • leadership meetings

  • workshops with marketing and sales teams

  • working sessions to develop messaging or strategy

  • reviewing pipeline performance and campaign results

The goal is always the same - helping your business move forward with greater focus and confidence.

 

Long-Term Impact

Ultimately the success of an engagement is not measured by the documents produced.

It's measured by whether the business becomes better at:

  • focusing its marketing effort

  • communicating its value

  • generating stronger opportunities

  • making confident commercial decisions
